IN-HOUSE CUSTOMS
Your declarations. Your team. Your control.
At a certain volume, outsourcing your customs declarations stops being practical and starts being expensive. Readyset builds your in-house customs function from gap analysis to go-live, so your business owns the process completely.
THE JOURNEY
Most businesses follow the same path. The question is knowing when to take the next step.
At a certain volume, the economics of outsourcing your customs change completely.
Most businesses outsource declarations because it is the straightforward first step. But as shipment volumes grow, per-entry agent fees compound, compliance visibility disappears, and the liability remains entirely yours throughout. There is a point where owning the function makes more commercial sense, and most businesses reach it without realising.
THE IN-HOUSE ADVANTAGE
What changes when your customs function is yours.
Bringing customs in-house is not just about cutting costs. It changes how your business interacts with HMRC, how your supply chain operates, and how prepared you are when something goes wrong.
OUR ROADMAP
From gap analysis to a fully operational customs function.
We work with your team at every stage. You are never handed a checklist and left to figure it out.
WHY READYSET
Building a customs function is not the same as filing declarations.
Most customs agents know how to submit entries. Far fewer know how to design and build a compliant customs function inside someone else's business.
Readyset has built customs functions from the ground up across the UK, establishing the first Freeport customs operation in the North of the UK. We work with businesses of all sizes, from mid-market importers to large-scale manufacturers.
IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?
The businesses that benefit most from building in-house.

Frequently asked questions about in-house customs
-
The threshold where in-house typically becomes cost effective is around 50 declarations per month. Below that, the cost of setup, software and training generally outweighs the savings. The gap analysis we conduct at the start of the process gives you the actual numbers for your business, so you can make the decision based on your specific volumes, commodity profile and current agent costs.
-
Not necessarily, though it depends on your volumes and the complexity of your commodity profile. Some businesses absorb the customs function within an existing logistics or supply chain role. Others at higher volumes do recruit a dedicated person. Part of what Readyset assesses in the business plan phase is what resourcing model makes sense for your operation, including realistic training timelines for existing staff.
-
The timeline varies depending on the complexity of your imports, the readiness of your team, and how quickly HMRC registrations are processed. For most businesses the gap analysis and business plan phase takes two to four weeks. Training and implementation typically runs four to eight weeks depending on your commodity range. We do not push go-live until your team is genuinely ready.
-
At minimum you need access to HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and a customs declaration software package. There are several on the market at different price points depending on your volumes. Part of what we cover in the setup phase is helping you select and configure the right system for your business so you are not paying for more than you need.
-
No. Readyset stays on call after go-live to handle operational queries, review declaration accuracy and flag any compliance issues as they arise. The goal is a team that operates independently, but that does not mean we disappear the moment the system goes live. We offer ongoing monitoring packages at different levels depending on how much oversight you want.
-
Yes, and for many businesses this is exactly how the transition works. Readyset handles your ongoing declarations while we build and train your team in the background. When your team is ready we hand over the function. There is no gap in your compliance coverage during the transition.
