THE MONEY HIDES IN FOUR PLACES

Why would HMRC owe me money?

Import duty is calculated from details on customs declarations you've probably never read, usually filed by a freight forwarder, at speed, thousands of times a year. Small errors compound quietly.

The wrong duty rate

The UK has trade agreements with the EU, Japan, Türkiye and dozens more that cut duty to zero on most goods. Thousands of importers pay the full rate anyway, usually because nobody set up the origin paperwork. That money is claimable back.

The wrong commodity code

Every product is classified with a code, and that code sets your duty rate. If your forwarder picked it, and they usually do, nobody with your interests at heart ever checked it. A wrong code can mean years of overpaying.

Errors you never saw

Duplicate declarations, valuation mistakes, duty paid where a suspension or 0% rate existed. Buried in declaration data you have probably never looked at, because why would you?

Reliefs you never claimed

Goods that were returned, re-exported, or processed and shipped back out. Many qualify for duty relief that simply never got claimed.

3 Year claim window
The clock is running

Refunds expire every single month

HMRC only accepts overpayment claims going back three years. Every month you wait, a month of refunds expires permanently.

Whatever your business overpaid in July 2023 becomes unclaimable this month.
